A
commercial EPC is required when a non domestic building is constructed, sold
or let. To require an EPC the building must use energy to condition the indoor
climate i.e.have a heating and/or cooling system.
The energy performance certificate looks similar to the energy labels now provided
with vehicles and many household appliances, and to the certificate produced
for residential properties. The EPC provides an A to G rating on the energy
efficiency of a building. An A+ rating shows that it is very energy efficient,
whilst a G rating is inefficient.
A recommendation report accompanies the certificate and provides practical
advice on measures which may be taken to reduce
the amount of energy consumed.
A commercial energy performance certificate is valid for 10 years.
Failure to provide an EPC may result in a fine of 12.5% of the rateable value
of the building up to a maximum of £5,000, together with the provision
of an Energy Performance Certifcate. Enforcement is carried out by Trading
Standards.
